Design Thinking: Placebo or Panacea? Critics and followers of the method.
f you search online for "critics on design thinking", you will get more than 50 million results!!! When a buzzword such as DT becomes more and more popular, it is natural that criticism follows. Perhaps the best know criticism of DT is from Pentagram partner Natasha Jen, delivered at the 99U Conference 2017. Her lecture "Design Thinking is Bullsh*t" has made big waves through the social media and initiated a movement against Design Thinking as an innovation method applied by groups of non designers. One would think that designers could be the first to embrace Design Thinking — and some do — but there have always been many skeptical designers, arguing that the concept of DT has little interest for the design community. From the innovation management side, some specialists want to substitute "Design Thinking" for "Design Doing", as if one would exist without the other.

Through an analysis of the recent history of design research and innovation methods, Katja Tschimmel will explore in her talk some of the most common criticisms of DT, while also giving her point of view on this controversy. What will the final conclusion be? Guess.
