Instead of steps or stages, we use waves to highlight the broadening number of user and business opportunities with each new wave.

Like in an ocean, each next wave pushes previous one forward, so basic features from MVP might get developed further in the core product or full-scale product stages.

The waves are not fully equal to product releases. According to your team dynamics and business processes, there might be several releases in each wave and even more micro-releases. Each wave marks a macro-evolution stage in a product maturity.

We came to this Product Evolution Canvas during a digital project with a client who wanted to "make everything at once". Instead of using super-power magic wand we created Product Evolution Canvas.

How to fill each wave of Product Evolution Canvas?
This Canvas is a great facilitation tool. Filling each wave with product features inspires your team to ask basic questions:
MVP wave — which features make it functional?
CORE PRODUCT wave — which features make it cover key user scenarios?
FULL-SCALE PRODUCT wave — which features make your product show its full potential?

How Product Evolution Canvas works in practice?
Here is an example of the canvas with some basic features of a banking app. We asked simple questions to move forward with the banking product. Some of the sticky notes show how Product Evolution Canvas works:
You can use Product Evolution Canvas not only for "digital products". It will do the same good job for you and your product team in other areas like fashion, FMCG, or public products and services.
Using the Canvas
How to use the canvas with your team? Follow 3 steps:

Print it in A0 format, or just draw on a flipchart page and fill it with features during a brainstorm with your internal product team or together with business client. It works great in both cases.

Put it on the wall where your product team works. Work on each wave one by one and fill it with detailed features and mark feature evolution routes in waves.

Include it in presentation materials for business people or even end users! All of them would like to know how the product will evolve and what will be the next great thing!
